Freezing chestnut trees
I planted many varieties of Aesculus (horse chestnut and buckeye trees) round the [European] Centre [for Music], but, alas, they didn’t take root. I am particularly fond of red horse chestnuts since they look great. In my park they grow well, protected from winds, but the Centre is in the open space, and so the trees froze. --- Krzysztof Penderecki, The Family Saga, p. 93.
