Some consider these shrubs useless, since they only blossom once and that is all. Others surround them with a veritable cult, for the sake of their impressive flowers, which spring out before the leaves. Some species can grow to a substantial height; one example is the cucumber tree (M. acuminata), with cucumber-like fruit, specimens of which grow in the lower park and near the manor.
In a well-known photo, the composer holds in his hand a branch of the huge-leaved umbrella-tree (M. tripetala) which can be found in the English section of the park. Saucer magnolias (M. x soulangeana) grow close by the house; they often repeat bloom in the same year.
